Lagoon Remediation Project - Croton Harmon Yard

Metro North Commuter Railroad, Metropolitan Transit Authority

  Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County, NY

  $10 Million

Savin Engineers provided construction management services in the remediation of a PCB contaminated lagoon. This work included:

--Containing lagoon sludge and groundwater with steel sheeting
--Lagoon sludge and contaminated ground-water pumping and treatment
--Sludge solidification with ground corn husks
--Sludge removal and disposal
--Lagoon refill and capping

The solidified sludge required a slump of less than one inch. Solidified sludge was then loaded on railroad containers and shipped to Texas for incineration. Contaminated soil underlying the sludge in the lagoon was removed and shipped by rail to Buffalo, NY for disposal in a hazardous waste landfill. The empty lagoon was then refilled with clean soil and capped with a HDPE liner.
